An Oxford sex shop has had its licence renewed, despite calls for it to be shut after members of a paedophile ring operating in the same area were jailed.

Darker Enterprises Ltd's application sparked objections from some residents.

The council said it decided to approve it on Tuesday as there had been no response from police, and just ten formal objections from the public.

The Private Shops UK store is not linked to the seven men convicted of targeting and grooming children.

But the men, who were jailed in June, often targeted their victims in the Cowley Road area and one complainant had claimed the area had "become synonymous with sleaze and the sexual exploitation of children".

The firm has been trading on the Cowley Road since 1981 and the council said it had not received any complaints about shop since it was first licensed in 2003.
