Oxfordshire rescuers saved by firefighters

Five passers-by pulled a 75-year-old man from an Oxfordshire river but then got stuck on a mudbank and had to be rescued themselves.

Firefighters set up an inflatable path at Port Meadow next to the River Thames in Wolvercote on Sunday.

The elderly man was taken to hospital "suffering from the cold".

A fire service spokesman praised the group who saved the elderly man - including four students - for their "swift action".
