Food recycling saves Cherwell council nearly £300k

A council in Oxfordshire says it has saved nearly £300,000 in landfill tax following the introduction of a food waste collection service.

Cherwell District Council said 8,000 tonnes of food waste had been diverted from landfill since the introduction of the scheme in October 2009.

The authority has to pay £37 for each tonne of waste sent to landfill.

It is now hoping to encourage more people to separate food from general waste for composting.
