Elderly man injured in Oxford house fire

An elderly man has suffered burns in a fire at a house in Oxford.

Firefighters and police were called to the property in Abbey Road in the early hours of Monday.

The 77-year-old occupant escaped the blaze but was taken to John Radcliffe Hospital where he was treated for burns and the effects of breathing in smoke.

His condition is described as stable. Officers have not ruled out the possibility that the fire was started deliberately.

Det Ch Insp Paul Hayles of Thames Valley Police said: "At this time we cannot say that this incident is being treated as arson, but we need a clearer picture of the incidents that took place prior to the fire."
