New recycling system introduced in Oxford

Changes to the recycling service in Oxford have come into force.

About 40,000 blue wheelie bins have been delivered to residents, which they can use for all recyclable items.

At the moment, only 38% of the city's waste is recycled but the council said it was hoping to increase this to 50%.

With the introduction of the new bins, people can also recycle more materials than before including plastics and drinks cartons.

Councillor John Tanner said: "Well over half of our rubbish goes to landfill.

"I know most city residents are already keen recyclers. Now nobody has an excuse not to recycle. We are making it easier for everyone to use their blue bins and to recycle even more."
