University student critical after stabbing in Oxford

A first year university student is critically ill in hospital after being stabbed on a street in Oxford.

The 20-year-old man was walking along Cowley Road in the early hours when another man got out of a car and attacked him near the Hobgoblin pub.

An ambulance was called after he walked to a property in Crown Street.

A 22-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody.

Police said the victim was in a critical but stable condition at the John Radcliffe Hospital. Police urged witnesses to the stabbing to contact them.

'Popular night'

Insp Simon Morton, from Thames Valley Police, said: "At this stage we believe that the victim knew his attacker and that this is an isolated incident.

"Wednesday night is a popular night for students on the Cowley Road and this incident happened at a time when there were possibly lots of people around, making their way home from a night out."

Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and will be patrolling the area.
