Oxfordshire pupils set for Pope performance

Choristers from an Oxfordshire school are preparing to sing in front of Pope Benedict XVI, during his four-day visit to the UK.

Boys and girls from The Oratory School, near Woodcote, in Oxfordshire, will perform at the open-air Mass at Birmingham on 19 September.

Head chorister Chris Redfern said: "Everyone's really excited as it's an absolutely massive event.

"I don't think anyone's going to be doing anything so big in the future."

The choir will travel to Cofton Park for rehearsals on 18 September and spend the night in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

On the day of the ceremony, which is being held to mark the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman, they will rehearse at 0700 BST ahead of the service at 1030 BST.

Director of Music Julian McNamara said most of the choir members had less than two weeks to prepare.

He added: "It's a thrill and an honour".
