A man who groomed a teenage girl on Facebook and then raped her in a hotel has been jailed for 16 years.

Imtiaz Baig, 37, told his 16-year-old victim he was a businessman renting out prestige cars and helicopters.

He persuaded her to meet him at a hotel in Newark, Nottinghamshire, last year, where he gave her alcoholic drinks.

Baig was convicted of rape following a trial at Nottingham Crown Court and sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

The court heard Baig, of Straight Drove, Farcet, near Peterborough, made the girl undress before raping her on 29 August. He also offered her money.

Det Insp Nikki Smith, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Baig spent months grooming his victim through Facebook and phone messages, and was not even deterred by the occasions when she did not turn up to meet him.

"She was rightly wary of his motives initially, but he persisted and did eventually persuade her to meet him with the sole intention of having sex with her whether she consented or not."
