A man had part of his ear bitten off while watching The Specials at the Splendour Festival in Nottingham.

John Bidder, 46, from Chilwell, was rushed to hospital after he was attacked by another man in front of the main stage, on Saturday evening.

Mr Bidder said he "went into a panic" after being told half his ear had been bitten off.

Police described the attack as "unprovoked" and have urged any witnesses to come forward.

Mr Bidder, who described himself as a big Specials fan, said he went to the front to get closer to the band.

"It got a bit lively, there was a lot of drunk people, proper flying drunk," he said.

"There was lots of pushing and shoving [and then] I felt this dull thud on the side of my head and someone said 'half of your ear's gone.'"

He said he panicked and felt confused before being taken to the medical tent.

He was then rushed to the Queen's Medical Centre by ambulance, where a surgeon "tidied" up his ear.

About 20,000 people were at the event held at Wollaton Park and police have asked for witnesses to come forward.
