The £27m redevelopment of a Nottingham college should be finished on time despite a fire at the weekend, an MP has said.

The fire at the Basford Hall campus of New College Nottingham on Sunday was "not as bad as first feared," Nottingham North MP Graham Allen said.

Mr Allen said the expanded technology college should open as expected next year.

More than 20 fire fighters from four stations tackled the blaze.

Fire service spokesman Andy Lindley said 50 rolls of bitumen felt caught fire on the roof of the new building, which made the situation more dangerous.

"It was very difficult - not only because of the difficult access but because of the intense heat and the actual tar running across the floor," he said.

Mr Lindley said the cause of the fire was not yet known, but a joint police and fire investigation was under way.
