Fire-hit DH Lawrence family chapel in Eastwood may be demolished
A former chapel in a Nottinghamshire cemetery, where author DH Lawrence's parents are buried, may have to be demolished after a fire.
At its height, 25 crew members were at the blaze off Chewton Street, Eastwood. Crews remained at the scene for more than six hours.
An investigation into the cause of the fire, which started shortly before 02:00 BST, is under way.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue said the building was at risk of collapse.
Neighbour Simon Taylor, who filmed the fire, said: "The roof was ablaze - you could hear the rafters clattering away and falling into the church. It was a complete fireball."
Firefighter Tim Marston said: "It was large enough for us not to commit crews inside the building. It's at risk of collapse even now."
A gravestone in the accompanying cemetery commemorates DH Lawrence's parents Arthur and Lydia Lawrence and his older brother William.
The author is also included on the headstone but he was buried in Vence, France, on 4 March 1930.
