The body of a missing international student has been recovered from a Nottingham canal, police have confirmed.

Miron Filipovic, 21, from Groningen in the Netherlands, arrived in Nottingham in September to study business at Nottingham Trent University.

Officers discovered the body on Wednesday night in a stretch of water off London Road.

He was last seen by friends at a party on Saturday night.

Parents 'distraught'

Mr Filipovic was on an international exchange and was due to return to the Netherlands in February next year.

Police said Mr Filipovic had left his student accommodation in Radford to go to a friend's birthday party in halls of residence on Castle Gate in Nottingham city centre.

His parents arrived in Nottingham on Wednesday from the Netherlands to assist police with finding their son.

They were said to be "distraught" by his death and are being supported by a police family liaison officer and a chaplain from Nottingham Trent University.

Officers were prompted to search the area of the canal on Wednesday evening following a call from a member of the public.

Inquiries are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the student's death.
