The trial of a senior Nottinghamshire police officer accused of shoplifting make-up has been told she deliberately concealed an item in her trolley.

Derby Crown Court heard Kim Molloy, a chief inspector, was spotted by staff at the Tesco Extra in Top Valley, Nottingham, on 24 November 2009.

Prosecutors said she hid Max Factor foundation under some bags.

Mrs Molloy, 45, who is currently suspended from her job, denies a single charge of theft.

'Clever and deceptive'

The court was shown CCTV footage of the defendant taking a trolley of items to the check-out.

While payment was made, the make-up remained in the trolley and full bags were then placed on it.

Prosecutor David Outterside told the court: "We say that what you have just seen is a very clever and deceptive effort on that CCTV footage to steal that container of make-up.

"I suggest that if the CCTV operator had not been so thorough Mrs Molloy would have got that container to the car and got away with it."

Mrs Molloy was stopped by a security guard as she left the store and arrested about two hours later.

The trial continues.
