Tesco has been refused permission to build a store in a Nottinghamshire town.
The retailer wanted to build a branch of just under 1,000 sq m (10,750 sq ft) with 80 parking spaces in Selby Lane, Keyworth.
The plan provoked local opposition and Rushcliffe Borough Council has now said it would impact too heavily on existing shops and residents.
Tesco said it would study the decision before deciding whether to appeal.
Local resident Olga Allen said: "Quite frankly this is a village and the other shops would lose out. We know this from where this has happened before in other villages.
"It would be totally out of character with the conservation area where many people live and these little cottages would be close to the store."
