An 81-year-old woman has undergone surgery after she was subjected to "a despicable and cowardly attack" in Nottinghamshire.

Isabel Skeldon, 81, of Mansfield, was walking along Edward Avenue in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 1315 BST on Monday when she was targeted.

A man assaulted Ms Skeldon and snatched her handbag leaving her with a fractured arm and cuts and bruises.

She was being treated at the King's Mill Hospital.

Det Insp Michael Putnar said: "This was a frankly despicable and cowardly attack by the standards of any criminal.

"This individual has targeted a vulnerable elderly lady and left her with some very nasty injuries, and they must be caught.

"I would urge anyone who saw or knows anything about this appalling crime to contact us as a matter of urgency.

Her attacker is believed to be a white man who may have left the scene in a red car in the direction of Priestsic Road.
