Northampton rapist sentence referred to Court of Appeal

A man jailed for 11 years for the rape of a woman in Northampton has had his sentence referred to the Court of Appeal for being "unduly lenient".

Gintas Burinkas, 36, of Victoria Road pleaded guilty to rape and assault at Northampton Crown Court last month.

During the attack on 26 December Gintas raped the woman and injured her face.

A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said the case had been sent to the Attorney General, who had decided to refer it to the Court of Appeal.

The case will be reviewed by judges at the Court of Appeal within five to eight weeks.
