Northampton Carnival cancelled due to wet weather

The Northampton Carnival has become a casualty of the weather.

The borough council told organisers that Delapre Abbey's grounds, where the carnival begins and ends, were too wet so the event should be cancelled.

The council said expected rain meant Saturday's carnival could not take place safely.

David Mackintosh, leader of the council, said: "I'm truly sorry for the late notice but we have waited as long as we could."

Morcea Walker, from the Northampton Carnival Arts Consortium, said: "We are trying to assess the magnitude of cancelling this event at such a late stage.

"There are people coming from as far away as Liverpool and Bradford."

The borough council has offered to work with the carnival committee to find a new date for the event later in the summer.
