Rushden shopkeeper foils robbers with mop

A shopkeeper in Northamptonshire fought off armed robbers as they tried to steal from his shop.

Dinesh Gorania and his son Kishan were shutting the Premier Shop on Church Hall Road in Rushden at 22:00 on Friday when a car pulled up and three men jumped out with crow bars.

Mr Dinesh grabbed a mop and hit at the door, which prevented the offenders from entering.

Northamptonshire Police is now appealing for witnesses.

Mr Gorania senior said: "I looked at how big the guy was but I did not care about his size."

His son Kishan said his dad often reacts on implulse.

"Dad was mopping up at the time and he just picked up the first thing in his hand," he said.

The incident took place on Friday 20 January at 22:00 GMT.

The robbers also smashed the front window of the shop as well as the windows of two cars belonging to the victims before leaving in their car.

No on was injured in the incident and Northamptonshire Police is appealing for witnesses.
