Daventry council warns of tax scam

A Northamptonshire council has warned residents of a council tax scam which promises them a refund into their bank account.

People in the Daventry area have been contacted and told their property has been re-banded and this has left them in credit on their council tax account.

Residents are then asked for their bank account details in order to pay the excess money back.

Daventry District Council said it did not call people about credit.

Corporate manager for finance at the council, Nick Stringfellow, said: "The council does not call customers to advise them of credit on their account.

"Refunds are either paid directly back to bank accounts if the relevant details are held or refund cheques are posted to the customer along with copies of their demand notices."
