James Paget Hospital to spend £9m on operating theatres

A hospital that has been criticised in two reports over the level of care it provides is to spend £9m on upgrading its operating theatres.

The James Paget University Hospitals Trust, in Norfolk, is to expand six existing main operating theatres.

Work is due to take 18 months when it starts at the hospital, in Gorleston, in Spring 2012.

The hospital was recently criticised in two Care Quality Commission reports and is awaiting the conclusions of a third.

The construction project will be carried out in two phases to enable neighbouring operating theatres to continue running.

Theatres will be fitted with ventilation systems to ensure any airborne contaminants generated during operations are removed.
