In pictures: Norwich war memorial and gardens reopened
A sculpture by acclaimed artist Paul de Monchaux was unveiled during the official re-opening of the war memorial and gardens in Norwich.
Sculptor Paul de Monchaux (left), alongside Norwich City Council leader Steve Morphew, said his statue marks the furtherance of peace, hope and survival.
Royal Anglian Regiment soldier David Heir and president of the Royal British Legion's Norwich branch Victor Howe cut the ribbon to the gardens.
War veterans were among the hundreds of people who gathered for the long-awaited official reopening of the war memorial which was rededicated on Armistice Day.
The efforts of service men were recognised in Councillor Steve Morphew's speech during the opening ceremony for the revamped site, which cost £2.6m to restore.
Norwich Lord Mayor Councillor Tom Dylan and Sheriff of Norwich Derek James joined other local dignataries for the afternoon ceremony.
The gardens sit on a terrace bridging the outdoor market and City Hall, with the war memorial now turned to face the city council headquarters.
Soldier David Heir salutes the new bronze statue by Paul de Monchaux, who also created the Wilfred Owen and BBC Churchill memorials.
Members of the public were keen to get a first glimpse of the gardens which have been out of bound to the public since 2004.
Many people took photos of the garden's new centrepiece, which backs onto the war memorial, with the refurbishment funded by the Homes and Communities Agency.
