A leaving reception for the outgoing leader of Norfolk County Council will not be footed by the taxpayer but by local Conservatives.
The £500 bill for the party for Daniel Cox was due to be paid by the county council and South Norfolk council.
The leader of the council's Labour group, George Nobbs, had drawn attention to the payment calling it a waste of public money.
Now the Conservatives on both councils have said they will pay for it.
Unions representing workers at County Hall had threatened a demonstration before the reception was due to take place on Thursday.
The treasurer of the Norfolk County Council Conservative group, Paul Wells, said:"Daniel Cox has been a wonderful servant to the Norfolk people during his time as a councillor.
"Conservative councillors, who pay into group funds out of their own pocket, felt that the cost of Daniel's Reception should be met by them as a way of thanking him for leading them over previous years."
Mr Cox resigned from his post in October in order to work as a volunteer in India.
