Merseyside Police said the man suffered a "cowardly attack" near a bar in Fleet Street when his group was chased from Seel Street after an "altercation".
He bled heavily after being stabbed in the chest and the thigh at about 02:45 GMT, a spokesman said.
A 24-year-old man from Garston, who was detained by door staff nearby, has been arrested on suspicion of wounding.
The attack victim is critically in University Hospital Aintree in Fazakerley.
Det Ch Insp Mark Kameen said: "We believe there has been a coming together of two groups and something has happened to spark a fight."
