A 73-year-old woman shot in the doorway of a house was not the intended target of the attack, police have said.

She was hit in the leg when a gun was fired through the door of the property in Peckmill Green, Netherley, Liverpool at about 18:10 GMT on Tuesday.

The woman is in a stable condition in hospital while a seven-year-old who was in the property escaped injury.

The gun was fired by one of two men who arrived on a motorbike and targeted the house, not the woman, police said.

The motorbike was later seen being ridden in the direction of Wood Lane.

Ch Supt Mark Wiggins of Merseyside Police said: "We believe that the house was targeted... and that is part of a dispute between those involved in serious and organised crime.

"We don't at this time believe that the 73-year-old lady was the intended victim.

"We are obviously pursuing all lines of inquiry to identify why this took place and exactly who was the intended target."
