A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a mother who went missing two weeks ago.

Police said they are "increasingly concerned" about Anita Stevenson, 39, who was last seen by her partner at their home in Wirral on 18 October.

Det Ch Insp Paul Denn, from Merseyside Police, said her disappearance was "completely out of character".

A 41-year-old man from Birkenhead is being questioned by police on suspicion of her murder.

Ms Stevenson was captured on CCTV cameras near Albany Road in Rock Ferry, between 11:20 and 12:20 BST on 18 October.

She was wearing a blue Adidas jacket and Nike leggings and trainers.

Det Ch Insp Denn said: "She has never been known to leave her daughter for such a long time."

"I would urge anyone who saw Anita in the area on that day, or who has seen her since to contact us.

"I would also like to appeal to Anita herself: Anita, if you are out there please contact us, or your family who are desperately worried, to let us know you are safe."
