Wirral Council cancels family bonfire and fireworks events

Wirral Council has defended a decision to cancel six community bonfires and firework displays to support a joint display with Liverpool on the Mersey.

It has also postponed two more events in Moreton and Birkenhead Park.

The council said all available stewarding and first-aid support would be at the River of Light event on the River Mersey on 5 November.

Bebington resident Liv Davenport said she was "disappointed" with the decision.

"I worry that the river display will be too crowded and difficult to access with a buggy," she said.

"I think local communities should have been consulted about this more thoroughly."

Bonfire and firework displays will take place on 6 November in Lingham Park, Moreton and in Birkenhead Park, replacing displays which usually take place at Upton Park, Woodchurch Leisure Centre, Central Park in Wallasey, Mersey Park, Mayer Park and Leasowe.

A spokesman for Wirral Council said: "Due to lack of available first-aid cover, we have had to rethink our usual council firework events.

"The safety and wellbeing of people attending council events is paramount, so we could not go ahead with our events on 5 November without the best cover possible."
