A man who inflicted 100 injuries on the girlfriend he murdered has been jailed for life.

Anne Marie Cropper, 47, was found dead with head and chest injuries in Royal Terrace, Southport, in September.

Ian Gordon, also of Royal Terrace, changed his plea to guilty at Liverpool Crown Court, four days into his trial for her murder.

The judge said the 52-year-old must serve at least 20 years of his sentence.

Det Insp Cheryl Rhodes, of Merseyside Police, said the fact Gordon initially denied responsibility meant the victim's friends and family had been forced to hear about the violence and abuse she had suffered.

"Anne Marie had 100 injuries when she died and nobody can begin to imagine what she had to endure at the hands of Ian Gordon," she added.

A tribute from Ms Cropper's family said: "Throughout the trial and hearing what Ian Gordon put her through has been absolutely heartbreaking and will be for some time to come.

"She meant nothing to him, but meant everything to us."
