Police investigating the death of a man on Merseyside believe he may have been "in an altercation" before he died.

The 37-year-old died in hospital after being found collapsed at a property on Hargreaves Street in Broad Oak, St Helens just after midnight.

A post-mortem examination to find the cause of his death was inconclusive.

Merseyside Police want to speak to "three males in their late teens or early 20s" seen with the man on Broad Oak Road on Saturday evening.

Det Ch Insp Steve Cox said officers were "keen to trace his final steps".

"I would urge anyone who remembers seeing a white man, approximately 6ft tall with short dark hair, walking along with another man between 10pm and 10:45pm to get in touch," he said.

"We believe the deceased may have been in an altercation with three males in their late teens or early 20s earlier in the evening."

He added that "information that may seem trivial could assist us greatly".
