Building work has started on the new £429m Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

A site next to the current city hospital is being cleared for the part government and part private finance initiative (PFI) funded project.

Hospital chief executive Aidan Kehoe said the new facility would provide the "most advanced" treatment for patients.

The hospital is scheduled to open in 2017.

Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust said it would include 18 theatres, 23 wards and 646 single bedrooms.

The current hospital will be demolished once the new development is completed.
