Workmen carrying out maintenance work on a Liverpool street have found a handgun and ammunition in drains.

Police said routine work was taking place in Teynham Crescent, Norris Green, on Tuesday afternoon when the discovery was made.

The weapon and ammunition are being forensically examined by police.

Det Ch Supt Paul Richardson said the gun and ammunition "were obviously being stored in the drains" and appealed for information.
