Smoke is continuing to billow across the Sutton area of St Helens as fire crews try to bring a blaze at a timber yard under control.

Five appliances are damping down a 300 tonne burning pile of reclaimed timber at the former Hays Chemicals site on Lancots Lane.

The fire service said the blaze was started deliberately.

A digger was used to turn the wood over to expose the seat of the fire, which began at 1400 BST on Tuesday.

Merseyside Fire Service said crews worked through the night to keep the blaze under control.

Crews attended a previous blaze at the same site on 13 September.
