A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder over the death of a man who was struck by a car following an assault.

Greater Manchester Police said the attack left the victim, who was in his 30s, lying in on the ground near The Esplanade in Rochdale shortly after 03:00 BST on Sunday.

A spokesman said he was set upon after a conversation with three men and hit by a vehicle "a short time later".

He added that the arrested man, aged 22, remains in police custody.

Appealing for information about what happened, Det Ch Insp Liz Hopkinson said the man who died had not yet been formally identified.

She said the trio who he spoke to had left in the direction of Rochdale Memorial Gardens and the driver of the car that hit him had stopped at the scene and was assisting with inquiries.

She said the attack had "resulted in the loss of a man's life, which will be devastating for his loved ones".

"One man is in custody, but our investigation is ongoing.

"This happened as a number of licensed premises were closing for the night, so it is likely members of the public saw or heard something which is relevant."
