A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman was knifed and suffered a fractured skull in Manchester.

The woman, aged in her 30s, was attacked as she walked along Mayfield Road, Whalley Range, on Wednesday.

She suffered knife injuries to her face and also developed a bleed on the brain, Greater Manchester Police said.

A 32-year-old man remains in custody for questioning and police are continuing an appeal for witnesses.

Det Insp Mark Astbury said: "We are also keen to speak to two white men, both thought to be in their 50s, who dropped a man with an arm injury off in a silver saloon to Manchester Royal Infirmary on Wednesday morning.

"The victim is still recovering from her injuries in hospital and specially trained officers continue to offer their support."
