A man has been shot in the legs with what police believe was a shotgun.

The man was injured in a field next to Hapsford Road in Bootle, Merseyside, at about 22:00 GMT on Friday.

He is being treated in hospital for "what is thought to be shotgun injuries". His condition is not thought to be life threatening.

The motive for the attack is "unclear" and a cordon is expected to remain in place for most of the day while investigations take place, police said.

House-to-house inquiries have begun and witnesses are being urged to contact police.
