A man is in hospital with a life-threatening head injury after being found collapsed in a street in Greater Manchester.

The man, believed to be aged about 30, was found by two people on the pavement in Wallgate area of Wigan at 01:25 GMT.

He remains in a critical condition and police believe he may have been assaulted.

Det Insp Martin Reddington, of Greater Manchester Police, appealed for the public's help to identify the victim.

"I would ask that if you were out in Wigan last night and saw a man being assaulted, or possibly a fight, near Wallgate, that you contact police immediately," he said.

The man is described as white, balding, and with a stubbly beard. He was wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt with a grey cardigan and blue trainers.

He was found near the Kwik Fit garage at the lower end of Wallgate.
