A man accused of murdering his sister by setting her on fire has appeared in court.

Stephen Archer, 50, is charged with murder and arson with intent to endanger life.

His sister, 49, died in hospital after suffering 70% burns in a blaze at her home in Manchester. Police believe she was doused with petrol and set alight.

Mr Archer, of Victoria Street, Openshaw, was remanded in custody by magistrates.

He is also accused of four charges relating to extreme pornography.

Mr Archer is due to appear at Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday.

His sister, who police said has yet to be formally identified, was airlifted from Surbiton Road, Newton Heath, on Monday.
