Works on a viaduct that will connect three railway stations in Manchester city centre will result in a train station being closed once a week.

The Ordsall Chord will eventually link Piccadilly, Oxford Road and Victoria.

Victoria railway station closed to train passengers earlier and shuts every Sunday until 17 April.

The closure will also allow improvements works on the Calder Valley and Bolton lines. Bus replacement services will be in place.

The Metrolink service is unaffected.

Some six million passengers use Victoria station each year. It reopened in October following a £44m upgrade.

Amanda White, head of rail at Transport for Greater Manchester, said: "There are a number of significant improvement works happening this weekend that may affect travel, particularly for rail passengers."

She said the works were "vital... and will ultimately allow Network Rail and train operating companies to deliver faster more frequent services across the north".

The Ordsall Chord is part of the multi-million pound Northern Hub upgrade for rail services across the North of England.
