Greater Manchester Police car bursts into flames on M60

A police officer escaped uninjured after his car bizarrely burst into flames, causing widespread delays on a motorway.

The vehicle caught fire on the M60 in Greater Manchester as the officer stopped to assist a driver on the hard shoulder at about 05:45 GMT.

Greater Manchester Police said the police car had developed a fault in its engine.

The blaze caused widespread delays near Ashton-under-Lyne.

Greater Manchester Police tweeted a picture of the burnt-out car and said: "One of our night team has gone to extreme measures to defrost the car!

"The car caught fire on the motorway as the officer was driving along. He managed to get it on to the hard shoulder and get out. He is fine!"
