A police officer was struck on the head with a brick or metal bar during a domestic incident in Manchester, the BBC understands.

The 37-year-old PC was taken to hospital after the attack, which happened in Warbeck Road, New Moston, at 17:15 GMT on Wednesday.

His fellow officers used a Taser to apprehend a 30-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of assault.

The injured officer has since been discharged from hospital.

The arrested man was having a psychiatric assessment, Greater Manchester Police said.

Ch Supt Wasim Chaudhry said: "This incident demonstrates the very real potential dangers that officers face on a daily basis.

"When an officer leaves the station to attend a call, they simply do not know what they might have to deal with.

"We are providing as much support to the injured officer and his family as we can as he recovers from this attack."
