Barman, 71, defends Heywood social club from armed gang

A 71-year-old barman fought off a gang of men armed with sticks at a Greater Manchester social club, police said.

The masked men demanded money at Heap Bridge Social Club on Waterfold Lane, Heywood in the early hours of Sunday.

Police said the man refused and threw a tray of glasses at them. The gang then dragged the man to the floor and repeatedly kicked him.

After he refused to open the safe, the three men ran off.

Greater Manchester Police praised the man's bravery and appealed for anyone who saw a group of men in the area at about 00:15 BST to come forward.
