A man who killed his girlfriend with a single punch following a row has been jailed for life.

Ryan Ingham, 27, of Southdown Crescent, Blackley, Manchester, was given a minimum 16-year term at Manchester Crown Court, Minshull Street.

Witnesses said they saw Ingham run up and punch his girlfriend Caroline Finigan, knocking her unconscious and sending her crashing to the ground.

She died later in hospital on the evening of 16 January.

Ingham, who denied murder, was convicted at an earlier hearing.

The court was told that the couple, who had argued regularly during their two-year relationship, had been for a night out in Manchester city centre.

They started rowing at around 01:10 GMT on 16 January at Shudehill near to the junction with Hannover Street.

'Reckless action'

Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Thorpe from Greater Manchester Police said: "Ingham and Ms Finigan had been together for a couple of years and had regular arguments.

"However, this does not excuse what he did and only he knows what made him attack her in such a way."

He added: "Ms Finigan's family have been left deeply upset and cannot believe someone who claimed to love her could kill her.

"Ingham himself will have to live with the fact his reckless and thoughtless action took the life of an innocent woman."
