Salford City Council blocks payday loan websites

Access to payday loan firms has been blocked from public computers in libraries and other council buildings in Salford.

The move is aimed at "saving people from spiralling into even more debt" the council said.

Residents will instead be diverted to a credit union website.

Salford City Mayor Ian Stewart said: "With lenders charging up to 4,000% interest people are digging themselves deeper and deeper into trouble."

He added: "That's why we have decided to take action and offer people a sensible alternative.

"Ultimately it's up to them what they choose to do with their finances but we want them to know there is another option."
