More than 150 schools are closed across Greater Manchester due to snow and freezing temperatures.

The worst affected areas are Wigan, Oldham and Bolton with a number of schools in Bury and Rochdale also closed.

Conditions are causing disruption on the roads and motorways and drivers are being warned to take extra care.

There is disruption to flights at Manchester Airport and trains have been affected between Manchester and London.

Manchester Airport said four inches of snow fell overnight and operations had been suspended between 09:15 GMT and 10:30, the quietest time of the day, to clear snow on the airfield with minimise the risk of disruption.

A spokesman said: "Three arriving flights diverted elsewhere and all morning departures are delayed by around 60 minutes.

"Five other flights have been cancelled because of bad weather at the destination airport."

Some Virgin trains have been cancelled between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly but the service is expected to return to normal from approximately 16:00.

Wigan Council has suspended Monday's waste collection service because of the snowfall.

Householders who will miss their collection are advised their waste will not be collected for another two weeks.
