A body found in the River Goyt in Greater Manchester has been identified as missing man Michael Simpson.

Mr Simpson's body was found at 14:30 GMT on Wednesday by the Pear Mill industrial estate, Bredbury, Stockport.

The 22-year-old, from Heaton Norris, disappeared after a New Year's Eve party at a friend's house on Stockport Road West, Bredbury.

Police said Mr Simpson's family had been informed and officers were supporting them.

Det Insp Julia Bowden, from Greater Manchester Police, said: "Our thoughts and condolences are with Michael's family at this devastating time.

"We do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding Michael's death and a file will be submitted to the coroner in due course."

Police continue to search the River Goyt for Neil Marsom, 38, who was spotted in the water by divers looking for Mr Simpson last Thursday.

Despite their efforts they could not rescue the father-of-three.
