Hunt for arsonist after eight cars torched in Oldham

Police in Oldham are hunting an arsonist after eight cars were torched in the early hours of New Year's Day.

The vehicles, all in the Royton and Shaw areas, were targeted in what police believe was a series of attacks by the same person.

The first vehicle set on fire was parked in a garage attached to a house on Firswood Drive, Royton.

Police say extensive damage was caused, but there have been no reports of any injuries.

After the first attack, seven further vehicles were set alight on Queen Street and King Albert Street, Shaw, between 02:00 and 07:00 GMT.

Det Insp Darren Meeks, of Oldham CID, said: "These arson attacks caused significant damage but could easily have resulted in far more serious consequences if the fire from the vehicles had spread to nearby houses.

"We have yet to fully establish a motive or explanation for the attacks, but we are linking them as we feel confident they were carried out by the same person."
