Manchester to welcome new year with town hall fireworks

Manchester's New Year's Eve celebrations are set to culminate with a 10 minute fireworks display from the roof of the city's town hall.

The party, which is alcohol-free and suitable for families, will be held from 23:00 GMT in Albert Square.

Manchester City Council said there would be other entertainment, including a "mass Gangnam Style dance".

The event is free and unticketed, but entry to the square will be controlled for safety reasons.

Councillor Pat Karney, from Manchester City Council, said: " Last year we did not have an official new year event in the city centre and it was very disappointing.

"Thankfully this year we've been able to come up with a solution."

Manchester City Council said the event was being funded through fees from hosting fairground rides in various areas of the city centre.
