Woman finds 'WWI shell' in Manchester cellar

Buildings were evacuated following reports that a suspected World War I shell had been found in the cellar of a house in Manchester.

The device was found by a woman clearing out her cellar in Burton Road, West Didsbury, shortly before 13:15 GMT, police said.

Businesses were evacuated and residents asked to remain indoors.

Bomb disposal teams recovered the device and those evacuated were allowed back by 15:20.

The device was described as about 1ft (30cm) long and torpedo-shaped.
