More than 50 firefighters were called to a large blaze at a five-storey building in Stockport town centre.

The fire broke out at the building, which is a block of flats under construction, on Lower Hillgate at about 02:20 BST.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said houses surrounding the site were evacuated as a precaution.

The operation had been significantly reduced by 09:30 BST and residents were being allowed back in their homes.

A large part of the town centre remains cordoned off and Lower Hillgate is closed in both directions between Market Place and the junction of Waterloo Road and Edward Street.

Police are at the scene directing traffic.
