A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a woman who died after she was mugged for her handbag.

Nellie Geraghty, 79, held the ashes of her late husband in the bag which was stolen in Shaw, Oldham, on 24 November.

She was found injured in an alley clutching the strap of the bag, but died in hospital the next day.

Police said a 37-year-old man had been arrested and was also being questioned over a robbery on Yorkshire Street, Rochdale, on Friday afternoon.

He remains in police custody for questioning.

Mrs Geraghty's family said she had carried the ashes everywhere with her and wished to be cremated with them so they could be scattered together on Mr Geraghty's allotment.

The ashes were kept in a small box in a blue velvet drawstring bag.

Residents of Shaw helped police last month in the search for items thought to be in the missing handbag.

Two boys, aged 14 and 17, have previously been arrested on suspicion of murder and have been bailed until 9 January.
