Man killed in crash by Manchester tram stop

A driver has been killed and a woman seriously injured when a car crashed into a post supporting overhead wires for trams in Manchester city centre.

The car crashed by the tram stop at Shudehill at about 14:00 GMT, forcing the vehicle on to nearby tram lines.

The woman, a passenger in the car, has been taken to hospital. She is thought to have suffered broken arms and legs.

Metrolink said there were no services from Piccadilly, Piccadilly Gardens, Market Street, Shudehill and Victoria.

A replacement bus service was running between Victoria (Corporation Street) and Piccadilly station (Fairfield Street).

The area around Shudehill was closed and police warned motorists to expect delays.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Greater Manchester Police.
